Field Education
At Grace Lutheran School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Field trips offer our students invaluable hands-on experiences, connecting what they learn in school with the world around them. Whether they are exploring local businesses, attending cultural performances, or visiting museums, each trip enriches their understanding of the world and deepens their curiosity.
From the earliest years, our students engage in meaningful excursions. Our youngest learners in Pre-Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten have had the joy of attending author visits both at Grace and at nearby Concordia University. These interactions not only spark a love for reading but also help students appreciate the creativity and imagination that goes into storytelling. Additionally, our PK-SK students have watched performances such as The Nutcracker at Dominican University, taking in the beauty of live ballet. Walks around the neighborhood to explore nature or release butterflies offer simple but profound moments to connect with the natural world.
As students progress to 1st grade, they experience more varied outings, such as trips to Legoland, where they learn about design and creativity through play. They also gain insight into local commerce by visiting small businesses like Spilt Milk, where they can see firsthand how companies operate within our community.
In 2nd grade, the students have the opportunity to visit the zoo, enriching their knowledge of animals and ecosystems while marveling at the wonders of wildlife. By 3rd grade, students delve into the scientific world with trips to the Museum of Science and Industry, where interactive exhibits ignite their passion for discovery. Theatre productions at Dominican are also a tradition for our 3rd and 4th graders, exposing them to the art of storytelling through performance.
One of the most anticipated field trips for 4th graders is their annual visit to the Shedd Aquarium. Here, they not only explore marine life but also participate in a squid dissection—a hands-on learning experience that they remember for years. This trip encourages scientific curiosity and gives students a unique perspective on the biology of sea creatures.
Our 5th graders get the chance to serve others through volunteer trips to Feed My Starving Children, where they pack meals for those in need. They also experience the arts on a grand scale when attending performances at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, an outing that brings the beauty of music to life.
For our middle school students, the learning opportunities become even more profound. In 7th and 8th grade, students visit the Holocaust Museum, where they gain a deeper understanding of history and human rights. And to balance the seriousness of those lessons, 8th graders celebrate their hard work with a thrilling day at Six Flags each year, a trip they eagerly anticipate throughout their middle school years.
At Grace Lutheran School, field trips are not just outings; they are critical components of our educational program. They provide students with real-world connections to what they learn in class, foster a sense of wonder, and build lasting memories. We look forward to continuing these traditions and exploring new opportunities for our students in the future!
